Program Positions

Casters

University of Maryland esports is seeking casters for our broadcast team. These students must exhibit necessary skills to talk in a confident manner on camera and have knowledge of at least one of our esports premier titles. As an esports caster, you will commentate regular season matches, playoff games, and esports events as requested in correlation with our broadcasting schedule for the academic year.

This position may require a 15 hour work week. Students may be financially compensated in this position.

Observers

University of Maryland esports is seeking observers for our broadcast team. Observers must have baseline knowledge of one or more of our premier titles that they wish to observe as well as a passion for providing the best viewership experience possible for our broadcasts. As an observer, you will work closely with the broadcast team to operate the best broadcast possible for regular season, playoff, and event games when needed.

This position may require a 16 hour work week. Students may be financially compensated in this position.

Social Media Community Manager

University of Maryland esports is seeking social media managers for our socials team. These students must have a meticulous attitude toward social media analytics and be creative in terms of content that is pushed out on our social media channels.

As a social media manager, you will collaborate with players, the broadcast team, and the graphic designers on curating content to be put out to Twitter, Discord, Instagram, etc. Coverage on social media can include broadcast updates, engagement posts, interaction with supporters or rivals, creative initiatives, community highlights, and more.

This position may require a 10 hours work week. Students may obtain financial compensation for these positions.

Photographer

University of Maryland esports is seeking photographers to assist our socials team. These students must have demonstrated experience with camera usage and preferably have one available to them as needed.

As a photographer for the program, you will work closely with social media managers, players, and the graphic designers to ensure we have adequate photo coverage on a regular basis for social channels and broadcasts. This involvement can range from action shots for broadcasts, to team photos for team calendars. Photographers will also assist during travel and events as necessary.

This position may require a 3 hour work week. Students may obtain financial compensation for these positions.

Graphic Designer

University of Maryland esports is seeking graphic designers. These students will be assisting in increasing the quality of our social media and event activations within the program.

As a graphic designer, you will collaborate with the other members of the social team, the broadcast team, players, and more to ensure that graphics are presented for socials, broadcasts, facility screens, and during events. Individuals in this role should be very communicative and have a collaborative personality. Graphic designers should have some level of proficiency in software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Canva, etc.

This position may require an 8 hour work week. Students may obtain financial compensation for these positions.

Videographers

University of Maryland esports is seeking videographers to join our content team. Videographers will be executing video projects in cooperation with players and the rest of the content team.

As a videographer, you will be in collaboration with players, the broadcast team, and the rest of the content team to curate creative content for social channels and content areas like Youtube and Twitch. These people should have a creative driven mindset and provide optimal communication across all channels. They also should be able to effectively present project ideas to the esports coordinator.

This position may occasionally have an 8 hour work week. Students may obtain financial compensation for these positions.

Video Editors

University of Maryland esports is seeking video editors to join our content team. Selected video editors will work with videographers and respective esports socials team members on finalizing content activations before being dished out to social avenues.

Video editors should have a collaborative mindset and should be able to work seamlessly with videographers and professional esports staff on bringing content visions to life to be utilized in the esports facility, on esports social channels, and on content pages including Youtube and Twitch. Editors should be flexible and innovative with content and understanding trends of what esports content is successful across the industry and within the UMD community. 

This position may occasionally have a 16 hours a week. Students may obtain financial compensation for these positions.

Writers

Writers will provide weekly blog updates regarding our premier team activities and/or club team accomplishments. This is a volunteer position with a possible academic tie-in.

 

Lead Coaches 

The University of Maryland is seeking professional title coaches for the 2022-2023 season. Professional coaches (online or in-person) must have adaptive personalities as well as advanced knowledge of the particular title in which they wish to coach.

A well-rounded resume of championship professional or intercollegiate gameplay, 1-3 years of experience coaching, demonstrated use of data analytics and effective VOD review is required. These are paid hourly positions:

  • 15 hours per week for League of Legends
  • 10 hours per week for Valorant
  • 15 hours per week for Overwatch
  • 10 hours per week for Rocket League

Assistant Coaches

University of Maryland is seeking assistant coaches for the 2022-2023 season. Assistant coaches must be self- driven as well as possess an advanced knowledge of the storylines, developer and mechanics of the particular title in which they wish to coach.

Assistant coaches will work closely with lead coaches, players, team managers, and analysts to ensure the competitive success of premier teams in respective competitions. Additionally, assistant coaches will keep the esports coordinator updated in terms of team progression and of any disputes that may come up internally, externally, or with league officials. Assistant coaches would be appointed by academic year unless extenuating circumstances arise.

These are volunteer positions which require a commitment of at least 10 hours per week.

Team Managers

University of Maryland esports is seeking team managers for the 2022-2023 competitive season. Team managers should have extensive organizational skills and be well-versed in scheduling tactics for organized groups.

Team managers will work in tandem with student coaches, the broadcast team, and the esports coordinator in scheduling practices, content shoots, and matches. An effective team manager should have great communication skills, be proficient in usage of Discord, and have basic knowledge of the game that they wish to manage.  

These are volunteer positions which require a commitment of at least 5 hours per week.

Analyst

University of Maryland esports is seeking analysts for the 2022-2023 competitive season. Analysts will work in tandem with the student coaches to provide statistical analysis of gameplay and pinpoint areas of growth that are needed within that respective title.

Analysts should have proficient data analysis skills and should be able to communicate data effectively with the coach to transition that information into qualitative improvements needed within the respective title. Analysts should have proficient knowledge of the game they are wishing to cover as well as great communication skills in order to collaborate with players and student coaches to ensure the best results possible. 

These are volunteer positions with a possible academic tie-in.
 

All folks who hold volunteer esport positions will have preference to be compensated as a shift based Terps Esports center host in 2023.

Terps Esport center host 

This paid student position requires the student employee to maintain safe and effective operations of our Terps Esport Center (coming in late 2023) and provide support to esports activities across the College Park campus.  

Position requires some day hours as well as nights and weekends. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, has a passion for and basic knowledge of gaming, is proactive, and pays close attention to detail.

Students may be undergraduate or graduate students with at least one year left before graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Promptly participate in daily arena opening, operations and closing procedures, guide students on the proper use of arena facilities and technology, enforce esports and gaming community standards and conduct.
  • Coordinate the Student casters and streaming schedules.
  • Host small events when necessary.
  • Provide basic support of PC and console gaming technology including, but not limited to managing computer cabling, basic troubleshooting of gaming consoles and escalating advanced problems to full-time esports staff.
  • Open and close facilities in a secure and timely manner.
  • Monitor gamers and point of entry system
  • Operate the Gamer Services desk, rent peripheral equipment to patrons and sale merchandise
  • Display a positive and supportive attitude toward the patrons.

Required qualifications

  • Basic experience using Microsoft Windows-based computer systems, game patching, basic PC hardware repair, and gaming consoles whether from direct experience with personal equipment or as an RecWell employee.
  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, sensitive a/v equipment, lighting and gaming keyboards. Must have the ability to lift small carry parcels and other items plus walk short distances.
  • The ability to work in a theatrical setting including: loud sound/music, flashing, strobe and moving lights.
  • Must be currently enrolled as a student at UM System campus with the ability to independently commute late in the evenings from and to College Park, MD.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with support of high-performance gaming hardware and gaming consoles, experience operating video and audio equipment, especially in the support of live streaming productions. 
  • Previous student employment with RecWell or volunteer work with UMD Esports
